Our Work

Julius Rosenwald believed in the promise of America. But he understood that an important part of that promise had to be equality of opportunity, which would only be possible through equal access to education.

Rosenwald’s story represents one of America's most empowering examples of philanthropy, collaboration, and a commitment to equality.

The Julius Rosenwald & Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park will honor his remarkable legacy and tell this powerful story in a way that inspires another generation of Americans. It will fill four current gaps in the National Park System as the first site to...

  • commemorate a Jewish American’s contributions;

  • interpret the Rosenwald Schools’ impact on African American education during segregation;

  • address early African American and Jewish partnerships; and

  • provide insights into philanthropy in the US.

In June 2024, a Special Resources Study conducted by the Department of the Interior concluded that Julius Rosenwald and the Rosenwald Schools are of national historic significance and recommended that Congress consider making the San Domingo School in Sharptown, MD, a National Historic Site.

The Campaign is working to have legislation passed in the current session of Congress to establish the National Historical Park, which will contain three Rosenwald Schools, an informal network of the remaining schools, and a visitor center in Chicago.
