Interactive Map & Database of Existing Rosenwald Schools

The Rosenwald School program covered thousands of square miles across the American South, connected by Booker T. Washington’s vision, Julius Rosenwald’s philanthropy, and the unwavering dedication of nearly 5,000 African American communities to educating their children. Today, a significant number of those communities continue to support their Rosenwald Schools through preservation, restoration, and interpretation.

The Campaign’s online map & database of the 592 schools that are still standing contains location data, as well as historical and current information on each school, photos of the school and links to other websites. This interactive tool enables researchers, historians, and interested members of the public to explore a vital piece of American history and connect with the communities who have preserved, restored, and revitalized their Rosenwald Schools.

For those who would like more background on using the map and database prior to exploring it, you will first encounter the home page, which contains relevant background information.  To access the map from there, place your cursor on “CLICK TO LAUNCH MAP” and the map of all the schools will appear.

Watch the tutorial (see arrow at “How to Use”), then explore the map and database, and learn something new about these remarkable Rosenwald Schools.
